Problem :

The Mythic Tome introduced a new narrative layer centered on animal guardians and primal spirituality, but the problem was how to translate abstract, myth-inspired symbolism into wearable, in-world cosmetics. Each design needed to embody the spirit of an animal guardian without becoming literal costumes or drifting into fantasy tropes. The goal was to make the cosmetics feel powerful, reverent, and deeply rooted in Dead by Daylight’s grounded horror tone.

Solution :

Our solution was to reinterpret animal archetypes through texture, material, and silhouette, finding visual metaphors that spoke to their essence rather than their anatomy. I collaborated on the concept and direction of key cosmetic sets, blending elements like bone, fur, feathers, and sigils into fashion-inspired motifs that felt ritualistic rather than decorative. The result was a fusion of horror, myth, and identity — each design telling a story of transformation and devotion without explicit animal imagery.

Challenge :

The challenge was balancing symbolism and subtlety — ensuring players could feel the presence of the guardian spirit without seeing it literally. We had to create designs that were distinct, cohesive across multiple characters, and flexible enough to fit within gameplay and animation constraints while maintaining lore consistency.

Summary :

The Mythic Tome marked a turning point in Dead by Daylight’s cosmetic storytelling — a collection that bridged myth and horror through art direction. By translating spiritual guardianship into layered costume design, we delivered one of the game’s most thematically ambitious and best-selling tomes, proving that symbolism and restraint can evoke as much power as literal representation.
