Problem :

The Chucky Chapter presented an unprecedented design issue: how to integrate a small, doll-sized killer into a game built around life-sized, first-person horror. The challenge was to make Chucky feel threatening, readable, and mechanically functional within Dead by Daylight’s gameplay systems — without breaking immersion, creating unfair visibility issues, or undermining the horror tone.

Solution :

Our approach was to reinterpret Chucky’s menace through animation, perspective, and personality rather than pure scale. We leaned into cinematic camera framing, exaggerated gestures, and expressive lighting to amplify his presence. I collaborated on visual direction and cosmetic adaptation, helping to translate his iconic look into Dead by Daylight’s gritty aesthetic while retaining the instantly recognizable spirit of the character. This involved refining materials, proportion exaggerations, and contextual presentation to bridge realism and stylization.

Challenge :

The toughest challenge was balancing fidelity to an iconic IP with the game’s established art and gameplay systems. Chucky’s smaller stature required unique considerations for camera height, hitbox visibility, and environmental interaction — all while maintaining the emotional weight and tone consistency expected from a Dead by Daylight killer.

Summary :

Through careful design, iteration, and collaboration with the license holders, the Chucky Chapter became a landmark crossover that expanded what was possible in Dead by Daylight’s ecosystem. By finding creative ways to make a small character feel big — both visually and emotionally — the team delivered a chapter that was both technically innovative and instantly beloved by fans.
